Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Call_of_Duty_4_Modern_WarfareAmazing war game. The single player campaign is great but a bit short. The multiplayer experience is intense and rather fast-paced. It will take a while until you get the hang of it. I’m level 20 and I can’t always get a 1:1 kills-to-deaths ratio.

BioShock (new)

BioShockThis game will freak you out. It’s twisted, it’s creepy, it’s bloody, it’s scary. Shooter with RPG elements (skills and inventory).

Genre: first-person shooter
Platform: Xbox 360
Buy it? Yes, unless you have heart problems.
Metacritic: 96
Have I finished the game? No.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (new)

OblivionThe Elder Scrolls series has the best open-ended RPGs and Oblivion is not an exception. There are about four main quests you can follow but it’s really up to you. You gain experience by using your skills rather than by killing monsters or completing quests. I definitely recommend it to the RPG fans.

Lost Odyssey

Lost_OdysseyTwo words: Japanese RPG (well, “RPG” is an acronym, but let’s not get stuck with the technicalities). The game is linear and it can be summed up to three parts: 1) solving a puzzle while randomly being attacked by monsters, 2) boss fighting, 3) cinematic. Rinse and repeat. It gets really repetitive. When I got to disk 3, it became more of a chore than anything else. By disk 4 I was looking at a walkthrough. Don’t get me wrong though—the game’s got a great storyline and voice acting—it’s just that after playing it, I realized JRPGs aren’t really my thing.

Genre: Japanese RPG
Platform: Xbox 360
Buy it? Only if you’re really into JRPGs.
Metacritic: 78
Have I finished the game? I’m at the last boss.

Mass Effect

Mass_EffectGreat sci-fi game. Amazing story and voice acting. Even those who are not crazy about RPGs will enjoy this game. It’s got a good amount of action. Hint: when your inventory gets full, go sell your items! It’s faster than converting them to OmniGel.

Genre: western RPG
Platform: Xbox 360
Buy it? Yes
Metacritic: 91

Dark Sector

Dark_SectorGot the game for a pretty good deal, but I couldn’t stand the combat system. Traded in after a week.

Mirror’s Edge

Mirror's_EdgeAnother game that I just couldn’t get into. I did the tutorial and tried the first level, and then stopped. You gotta jump around from the top of buildings and do some acrobatics. This game tries to be too edgy for me. I don’t like when the aim is to press a sequence of buttons.

Genre: action
Platform: Xbox 360
Buy it? No
Metacritic: 79
Have I finished the game? No

Overlord

OverlordI really didn’t get into into it; I tried twice, a week apart, to no avail. The biggest issue it has is that it is an action-adventure game without an in-game map. It was very annoying to run around in circles looking for “Melvin’s Kitchen”. And even after I thought I had completed the quest that allowed me to have red minions, I could not summon them even if I had enough red energy for it.  I got to admit the game does have pretty good visuals though.

Metacritic: 76
